Overview
MDMA (Ecstasy) is an empathogenic stimulant that causes euphoria, emotional closeness and heightened sensory awareness.
MDMA (3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine), or 'Ecstasy', is an amphetamine known for its empathogenic, euphoric and stimulant effects. It belongs to a family of drugs called entactogens ('touching within'). First synthesised in 1912 but not used recreationally until the 1970s, MDMA was used as a medicine before being made illegal in the 1980s.
Clinical studies show MDMA combined with psychotherapy can treat PTSD, anxiety and depression. Pure MDMA is a white crystalline powder, usually pressed into pills or gel capsules. Due to high demand, the Australian market is prone to adulterants — PMA, PMMA, MDA, methamphetamine, cathinones and others.
Australian pills can vary greatly in MDMA content — always reagent test before use.
Safer Using
Eat about 30 minutes before use Stay cool — in heat above 25°C MDMA raises dangerous overheating risk; rest regularly Hydrate carefully: 250 mL water per hour when resting; 500 mL per hour when dancing — do NOT over-drink Eat every 2–3 hours; if food is difficult, try a smoothie or sports drink Standard dose: 60–100 mg depending on body weight; weigh powders with 3-decimal-place scales Always test your pills — use Mandolin, Marquis and Mecke reagents If redosing, wait at least 2 hours after the peak Sleep or take a substantial rest within every 24-hour period When snorting: crush to fine powder; snort water before and after; use your own straw
⚠ Avoid Combining With
DANGEROUS: 5-HTP and L-Tryptophan (serotonin toxicity); MAOI antidepressants (unpredictable potentiation, serotonin toxicity, hypertensive crisis); Tramadol, ice, cocaine and other stimulants (seizures, psychosis, heart strain); DXM (serotonin toxicity). CAUTIOUS: Alcohol (dehydration, higher risk of alcohol poisoning); SSRI antidepressants (counteract MDMA effects and risk dangerous dose escalation); some antibiotics (inhibit MDMA metabolism, drug builds up in system). Particularly dangerous if you have: heart conditions, hypertension, anxiety, insomnia or pre-existing mental health issues.
🚨 If Things Go Wrong
If someone overheats: move them to a cool area, apply wet cloths, call 000. If someone has a seizure: protect from injury, do not restrain, call 000. MDMA is tested for in roadside saliva tests — detectable 24–72 hours since last sleep.
Wait at least 24 hours before driving. If someone appears to have serotonin syndrome (confusion, agitation, high temperature, rapid heart rate, muscle twitching) — call 000 immediately.
Effects
Feelings of love, empathy and emotional closeness Mood lift and euphoria Decreased fear, anxiety and insecurities Increased sense of touch, energy and sensory awareness Decreased appetite, increased heart rate and blood pressure Dilated pupils, jaw clenching (bruxism) and muscle tension Nausea, dry mouth and restlessness Rapid eye wobbles (ocular clonus), dizziness Increased body temperature (hyperthermia) Come-down: depression and fatigue lasting 48–72 hours Rare: seizure, water intoxication, death (approximately 2 per 100,000 users)
Dose & Duration
Swallowed (60–100 mg per pill/cap) or snorted (50–100 mg per dose). For MDMA when swallowed: Total Duration 4–6 hours; Onset 20–90 minutes; Peak 2–3 hours; Coming Down 1–2 hours; After Effects 2–72+ hours. MDMA remains active for 12–24 hours after apparent effects pass.
Drug testing: MDMA is tested for in roadside saliva tests and is detectable for 24–72 hours since last sleep; Urine 1–4 days; Hair up to 90 days; Blood 1–3 days.
